Nelson Mandela’s 8 Lessons of Leadership
August 3rd, 2008 by adminDear Friends,
Nelson Mandela is arguably one of the most inspirational world leaders of both the 20th and 21st centuries. An ardent fighter for his country’s freedom from the self-imposed shackles of apartheid, Mandela endured 27 years of imprisonment in South Africa’s notorious prison on Robben Island , and stepped back out into the world to both preach and practice forgiveness, responsibility and progress.
In commemoration of his 90th year, TIME magazine has published a list of eight lessons on leadership from Nelson Mandela that are timeless and relevant, whether you sit in the boardroom of a large corporation or share a desk at a small start-up, were elected to the Oval Office or the mayor’s office of your small town, head up a local parents’ initiative or the WHO.
- Courage is not the absence of fear - it’s inspiring others to move beyond it.
- Lead from the front - but don’t leave your base behind.
- Lead from the back - and let others think that they are in front.
- Know your enemy - and learn about his favorite sport.
- Keep your friends close - and your rivals even closer.
- Appearances matter - and remember to smile.
- Nothing is black or white.
- Quitting is leading, too.
