    Dear Friends,

My online Merriam-Webster dictionary defines “optimism” as:

That’s something many people are struggling with right now, in the midst of the current economic situation. How is it possible to “anticipate the best possible outcome” when the atmosphere at work is dire (if you still have a job, that is!), and the evening news seems to have become a check list of calamities?

Of course it’s easy to put on the proverbial smiling face when things are going well! When times get tough, however, our innate ability to maintain a realistic level of optimism can be what inevitably prevents us from sinking our own professional ship in a sea of doom and gloom.

According to psychologist, Susan Segerstrom, optimism can be a decided advantage in the workplace. People who remain optimistic when times get tough stay motivated to achieve their goals - even in the face of adversity. Their motivation encourages them to think outside the proverbial box instead of letting fear paralyze them into playing it safe. That makes them more prone than there pessimistic counterparts to being solution- versus problem-oriented.
